The NYPD Guardians Association: Leadership, Honor, Respect
On Tuesday, January 22, 2025 I had the honor of sharing remarks at the NYPD Guardians Association.
The meeting occurred at the New York City Police Training Building
(old police academy) on East 20th Street in Manhattan.
The site is now home to the NYPD Candidate Assessment Center.
The NYPD Guardians Association
“Founded in 1943, the Guardians Association, a fraternal organization of the NYPD, works to ensure protection and support for African-American police officers and civilians. Members' life histories reveal the complexities of work in law enforcement, the impact of internal support structures and advocacy, and the variety of personal experiences and identities that endure within the force.” Columbia University Center for Oral History Research
The event was the first meeting of the year for the association, and one hundred members attended.
These public servants represent leadership, honor and
respect. Their service to protecting the people of New York, and their appreciation
for each other represent the finest characteristics of law enforcement.
Gratitude
Lieutenant Gordon’s leadership was clearly evident by his rapport
with association members, and his uplifting remarks throughout the event.
NYPD Detective Emerson A. Charles of the association also deserves gratitude for his introducing me to Lieutenant Gordon.
After the event, Detective Charles and I had a invigorating discussion; and his enthusiasm for his profession and ideas to inspire recruitment and morale are commendable.
NYPD Commanding Officer / Inspector Terrell Anderson
The evenings featured speaker was NYPD Commanding Office,
Candidate Assessment Division, Inspector Terrell Anderson.
Inspector Anderson was knowledgeable, insightful and
inspirational. He exemplified pride for
his profession and encouraged association members to be ambassadors of
recruitment to inspire future NYPD officers.
The Inspector also encouraged attendees to destigmatize negative
perceptions of policing. He emphatically
stated that their "example in their families, communities, schools,
and houses of worship is a great service to the profession."
Additionally, Inspector Anderson encouraged attendees to accentuate
the positive qualities of potential NYPD recruits.
He stated “each of us must be recruiters for the
department, and we must understand the power of encounter. Our positive interactions with the community
must never be underestimated.”
Remarks
I shared my admiration for their service, and the inestimable
value of their dedication to protect and serve during irrefutably challenging
times.
Also, I shared the interdependent principles of my NYPD /
FDNY Operation Resiliency Initiative, which in my opinion are critical to
law enforcement.
These principles are as follows:
·
Ethical Leadership
·
Morale
·
Emotional Resiliency
·
Suicide Prevention
Final Reflections
Fraternal organizations, of which the NYPD has forty-one,
are vital to law enforcement agencies.
These organizations build camaraderie with colleagues which serves
to inspire perseverance, commitment, and morale.
It was my honor to share remarks at this distinguished event. The evening reinvigorated hope by the dynamic
expressions of dedication to policing.
This dedication was epitomized by the leadership of the Guardians
Association and its members.
Finally, it was my privilege to deliver the benediction to conclude the event with the blessing of almighty God upon the attendees.
Let us pray that God forever hold all who protect our communities in the palm of His hand.
