Character: The Preventive System of Education
It is my 20th consecutive year as liaison on issues of community policing and violence prevention for the association.
The remarks followed my previous presentation to the association, where copies of my latest cover story for The Chief of Police titled America's School Issues and Response: Coronavirus, Security, Character Academics were distributed to all attendees.
During todays remarks I focused on this excerpt from the article, and read the selection verbatim. I stated to the association that aside from the necessary physical, personnel, and procedural security measures for schools, the development and example of character was critical.
Excerpt
• Educators are respected as individuals with character
• Educators are admired in their dedication to the youth entrusted to their care
• Character is the edifice of the preventive system
• Vigilance is exercised to prevent inappropriate behavior
• Improvements in behavior are motivated because students know the educator cares about them and is approachable and available when needed
• Speedy measured intervention in response to warning signs takes place due to vigilance and awareness
• Educators earn the admiration of youth
• Discipline can be as effective as an expression of disappointment or a reproachful look because there is loyalty from the young people to the educator who cares for them
It was stressed to attendees that police officers can easily be substituted for educators as character is necessary for all members of society.
