NYPD Crime Prevention Training

On Wednesday, May 30, 2001, 75 crime prevention officers of the New York City Police Department gathered for training at their Police Academy in New York City.

As a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and instructor for the Bergen County Police Academy in New Jersey, I was invited by Lt. David J. Panetta of the NYPD to speak to the group. I covered how to conduct security assessments of commercial and residential locations, as well as various crime prevention and community policing initiatives.

I was joined by three of my law enforcement colleagues who were also instructors for the Bergen County Police Academy:

  • Sgt. Patrick Fay of the Hackensack Police Department
  • Sgt. Bill McGovern of the Milford Police Department
  • Lt. Bob Wilson of the Teaneck Police Department

In addition to security assessments, our agenda covered:

  • Neighborhood Block Watches
  • Youth Police Academies
  • Citizen Police Academies
  • Senior Citizen Police Academies
  • School Resource Officers
  • National Night Out
  • Citizen Appreciation Events
  • Private Public Partnerships
  • The Board Certified Protection Professional Designation by ASIS International
  • The COPS Community Policing Practitioner Certification Program

The event highlighted the importance of crime prevention and community policing initiatives and served to build bridges between numerous law enforcement agencies.
